VANUATU DOGS

VANUATU DOGS

The Vanuatu Dog Population Management and One Health initiative is a multifaceted project which aims to improve the health and well-being of free-roaming dogs, and reduce environmental and public health impacts.

What we're doing

Through collaboration with local partners, VBB hope to establish a sustainable and ultimately, locally-owned, dog population management program in Vanuatu.  Our pilot project incorporates a census, humane animal handling training for local animal handlers, VetTrain surgical training initiatives for local veterinary and para-veterinary staff, and community engagement.

What we're doing
Why it's important

Why it's important

Free-roaming dog populations impact animal welfare, food security and public health:

  • Injury to humans from dog aggression
  • Zoonoses: leptospirosis, soil transmitted helminths, ectoparasites
  • Animal welfare: untreated disease/injury – trauma, dog fight wounds, heartworm, tick-borne disease, ectoparasites
  • Environmental contamination from animal waste and dog baits (which also affect non-target species)
