Tell us about your volunteer experience?
In 2008 I spent 6 weeks volunteering for VBB in Sikkim and I am really greatful for this experience. I worked in the main hospital in Gangtok as well as in the mobile clinic in Sombaria in West Sikkim. I also got a chance to visit Darjeeling Goodwill Animal Shelter in West Bengal. I was impressed by the way local staff deals with everyday tasks using such little equipment. They are doing an amazing job.

What do you think is the best aspect of the program?
The best thing about the program is that it works very well and is highly efficient. Thanks to the success of the program achieved so far and the education of public, the local people appreciate what VBB is doing for local community and the dog population. It gives the organisation a positive feedback and makes further work bit easier. The welfare of community dogs is improving in general.

What do you like most about being a volunteer?
The work itself was a huge challenge but very satifying in the end. I enjoyed working with local staff and other volunteers a lot and had a chance to get to know the country and the culture from a different point of view, not just like an ‘ordinary’ tourist. I visited many interesting places and met lots of lovely people and dogs. And I also learned loads from local people; the way they live their everyday lives, their beliefs and sense of humour are now a great source of inspiration for me.
