Contact

General

Vets Beyond Borders cannot provide veterinary advice. We recommend you contact your local veterinarian for assistance.

VBB will at times accept in-date veterinary consumables and equipment on behalf of our partner organisations across Asia Pacific.

If you have in-date stock that you wish to donate, please email us at admin@vetsbeyondborders.org with a list of:
- product names/description
- quantity
- expiry dates (if relevant)
- any relevant images

Please note, sometimes volunteers travelling to a deployment can take small quantities of products in their luggage but in most cases it’s preferable if shipment directly to our Partner Organisation is arranged as part of the donation. This is absolutely the case with donations of equipment. Thank you for understanding.

Volunteering

Our Partners offer different support for each of their programs and these can vary widely. Below you will find a generalised list, but we recommend you view the relevant pages or contact us for Program-specific information.

Volunteers will generally need to cover their own expenses for:
- flights to/from the Program destination
- accommodation
- visa to enter the country
- in-country veterinary registrations
- any relevant vaccinations for the program (i.e. rabies)
- daily living expenses - meals etc

What's provided:
- airport pick-up/drop-off
- domestic flights to any remote project locations
- accommodation during outreach
- insurances (see next FAQ)
- liaison contact to provide in-country support, hospitality, and orientation
- all veterinary equipment and consumables required to undertake the program

VBB provides travel insurance coverage for all volunteers as part of their overseas deployment, which is managed through a policy held with our insurer. The coverage is in accordance with the insurer's Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), which will be shared upon deployment. Volunteers are encouraged to review the PDS carefully and arrange any additional insurance required for their travel before, during, or after deployment at their own expense.

VBB also offers limited Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance for volunteers who meet the following criteria:

- Approved by our veterinary team to volunteer with VBB
- Australian citizens or permanent residents
- Current VBB members

For Non-Australian volunteers, please note that VBB's Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance does not apply. If you do not meet the criteria above, you will need to source your own coverage should you choose to.

Additionally, for volunteers deploying overseas, a $50 overseas deployment fee applies. This fee helps cover essential administrative costs, such as coordinating placements with partner organisations, managing logistics, providing travel insurance, and ensuring a smooth onboarding process. This fee is in addition to the standard VBB membership fee.

VBB deploys experienced veterinary volunteers with a minimum of 2 years post-graduate clinical experience. Volunteers must hold the following qualifications to be eligible to volunteer.

Veterinarians: Must hold a veterinary science qualification recognised by the Australian Veterinary Boards Council or the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and be registered to practise in the jurisdiction of usual residence.

Veterinary Nurses: Awarded a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or Bachelor of Veterinary Technology/Nursing, or equivalent.

Veterinarians with between 1 and 2 years relevant clinical experience are considered on a case-by-case basis. New graduates and final year veterinary students are encouraged to volunteer as veterinary aides. Contact us at admin@vetsbeyondborders.org for more information.

When veterinary students are deployed, they are only authorised to perform the duties of veterinary nurses. They are not permitted to perform acts of veterinary science. They must be supervised by a registered veterinarian or other senior staff member of the Program's staff, to ensure that their duties are restricted to those of a veterinary nurse.
